I was my mother’s only child, yes, but I was raised in the South, and growing up in the South meant family did not belong to one household. Family belonged to everybody. Everybody’s children were your children. Everybody’s kitchen was your kitchen. Everybody corrected you, fed you, watched you, and prayed over you. That was the kind of world I came from.\u003cbr\u003eI was born in Griffin, back when it still felt like a small country town, though if you go there now you would hardly recognize parts of it. New subdivisions sit where dirt roads once stretched for miles. Buildings stand where fields used to breathe. But in my mind, Griffin still looks the way it did when I was a little girl running barefoot through the South Georgia heat.\u003cbr\u003eMy mother came from a large family. There were ten of them altogether, five girls and five boys, and at the center of it all stood my grandmother, Mrs. Mittie L. Nash, whom we called Big Mama. Big Mama’s house was never quiet. Between my mama’s brothers and sisters, cousins running in and out, pots cooking on the stove, radios humming in the background, and somebody always fussing about something, there was no room for anybody to feel alone.
